Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the 3 rd Quarter 2017 – Manufacturing, Hotels, Restaurants, Insurance, Financial Intermediation Activities, Child-care, Elderly care


The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released results of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the third quarter of 2017. Survey coverage for this quarter comprises Manufacturing; Hotels; Restaurants; Insurance; Financial Intermediation Activities; Electricity, Gas & Water Supply; Child-care and Elderly Care. This survey excludes the self-employed, as well as insurance agents and brokers not directly employed by insurance companies.

  

At the end of the third quarter of 2017, Hotels had 54,524 full-time employees, down slightly by 0.1% year-on-year; average earnings (excluding bonuses) of full-time employees in September rose by 2.3% to MOP17,200. Restaurants had 25,870 full-time employees, up by 2.7% year-on-year, with the average earnings falling by 0.3% to MOP9,280.

  

Manufacturing had 9,863 full-time employees, a decrease of 0.6% year-on-year; average earnings in September rose by 4.5% to MOP10,730. Electricity, Gas & Water Supply had 1,118 full-time employees, up by 1.5% from a year earlier; average earnings grew by 13.2% to MOP34,240.

  

Insurance had 558 full-time employees, up by 2.6% year-on-year; average earnings in September rose by 5.3% to MOP26,750. Financial Intermediation Activities had 404 full-time employees, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%, with the average earnings rising by 7.6% to MOP15,030. 

  

Child-care and Elderly Care had 1,409 and 752 full-time employees respectively, up by 11.3% and 11.6% year-on-year; average earnings in September increased by 5.5% and 1.7% respectively to MOP14,680 and MOP14,080. 

  

At the end of the third quarter, job vacancies in Hotels (2,221) rose by 352 year-on-year, while the number of vacant posts in Restaurants (2,172) was similar to that a year ago. Moreover, 72.0% of the vacancies in Manufacturing and 67.6% of those in Child-care merely required junior secondary education or lower. All of the vacancies in Financial Intermediation Activities required knowledge of Mandarin; meanwhile, 72.2% and 94.4% of the vacancies in Insurance required knowledge of Mandarin and English respectively.

  

In the third quarter, the employee recruitment rate (6.1%) and the employee turnover rate (4.7%) in Hotels fell by 1.1 and 0.4 percentage point respectively year-on-year, while the job vacancy rate (3.9%) rose by 0.6 percentage point, implying that there were still a number of vacancies available in Hotels. In Restaurants, the employee turnover rate (6.5%) and the employee recruitment rate (5.4%) dropped by 0.6 and 4.7 percentage points respectively, indicating that the manpower situation in the industry has improved.

 

In the third quarter, a total of 222,971 employee participants from the surveyed industries attended training courses provided by the establishment (including courses organised by the establishment or in conjunction with other institutions, and those sponsored by the employer), up notably by 55.7% year-on-year. Hotels had 217,919 participants in vocational training, with most of them attending courses in Services (49.7%) and Business & Administration (41.6%); the majority of the participants attended courses during office hours. Meanwhile, over 70% of the participants from most of the industries attended courses paid by the establishment, while the corresponding rate in Child-care was only 42.8%.
